What a weekend for British Formula 1 fans. A top 3 lockout. All three of them leading for a stage and their hero, in the latter stages of his career picking up potentially one final glorious home victory (we can’t guarantee the Ferrari will be a contender next year, although that might not matter to Lewis).

The level of British racing talent is currently remarkable, with Ollie Bearman due to join the grid, it wasn’t always this way and for a long time home fans had just one contending driver to cheer on, be it Mansell, Hill, Coulthard or Button.

As the Italians, French, Brazilians and even Germans are now learning, homegrown talent isn’t always a guarantee and with only twenty places amongst an increasingly global base, anything can happen if the talent dips by just a few percentage points, maybe a few more grid slots would help ensure as many nationalities as possible (and who knows, maybe a female driver!).

The Andretti news seems to have quietened of late, Formula 1 in a current competitive phase helps keep the media focus on track or maybe they’ve just started operating behind the scenes as they were asked to but, let’s see if the summer break slowdown brings that back to the fore.
