Adieu Montreal, once again you have delivered a thoroughly entertaining race which shows, that for all of the technical innovations and rule changes, a little bit of rain really does mix it up and create the conditions that allow a variation in car performance (although having a quick car is still absolutely vital).
Those proposed rule changes for 2026 have generated a lot of controversy, its worth noting that they are only the template and that comments from team bosses and drivers will always have a degree of political posturing.
Formula 1 has always been a balance of ‘the show’ with the drivers and championship battles taking centre stage with the undercurrent of mechanical genius at work to create these opportunities, whatever the regulations bring it would be great to see more transparency around how the teams design, and particularly set cars up to really ramp up just how impressive the engineering side really is.
Going back a few seasons to when Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were teammates, Valtteri always seemed to be closely matched with Lewis on many weekends but during the race, Lewis was streaks ahead especially on tyre management, it would have been a great highlighting of his skills were they able to show that Lewis set his car up in a particular way to generate more race pace versus his qualifying performance, weighing those margins up between teammates or even driving a setup that the other driver struggles with, it doesn’t have to be too technical but so much happens in Formula 1, bring the mechanical side into the spotlight could provide even more interest.
