Monaco, sit down, we need to talk.

This is a legendary race, ask any non-racing fan to name a track and if its not there home country’s circuit then it will be Monaco, the name, the prestige is something that can be replaced and this needs to be remembered.

On television, the images look fantastic and watching the cars at full speed brush against the walls is unbelievable, the precision required and the penalty for any small mistakes make the challenge worthwhile, but Sunday’s procession was just two far which leaves two options to make sure this race retains the place it should have as a premier event.

Either the track needs modifying, with suggestions that a stretch of road after the hairpin could be used to extend the run down into the tunnel (although there is a safety concern that putting the main overtaking spot there would bring) or as Lewis Hamilton suggested, a special set of one-off Monaco tyres should be created, it would be hard to manage the pace if the driver behind has a five second offset and can brake fifty yards later, three pitstops a race would be fascinating as well.

Or there is a chance to completely invert the situation, play into Monaco’s unique concentration challenge by having a longer race, two three hour sessions on a Saturday and Sunday, no blue flags and mandatory tyre allocations to ensure multiple stops, it would risk a longer duller race but the idea of the drivers having to push flat out for so long on such a tough circuit, it could really set this race out from the others, something Monaco deserves.
