A lot was learned during the pandemic of 2020 by more important aspects than sports, but for Formula 1, the curtailed season surely reinforced that the circuit makes such a difference in defining the entertainment of a race.

Returning to Imola, alongside tracks like Misano, Istanbul, Portimao, the Nurburgring, even the alternate Bahrain circuit all mixed the season up and while a dominant car and driver will usually succeed, for the fans it does create a different viewing experience.

Having two races in Italy, no matter how classic the track seems like a strange situation in the longest season ever, Imola deserves to remain on the calendar for its history, scenery and a challenging old fashioned layout but alternating with Monza is surely the way forward.

F1 really ought to aim for 30 circuits on a 2 out of 3 year rotation, of course that would require a lot of contract renegotiation’s and different countries working together but it feels the right way forward, it would leave us with six spots on the current roster, Germany and France surely have to sort one out, South East-Asia has an eye on a new location (although Malaysia would be great), we’ll have Madrid and whether at Kyalami or a street circuit, Africa needs a place on the calendar, that leaves one, another race in South America? Rio would certainly look spectacular.
